🛋️ Home & furnitureHow to remove yellow pillow stains

Yellowing from built-up sweat, drool and sebum · check the filling first

Yellow stains on pillows are sweat, drool, sebum and hair products that seep in while you sleep, build up and oxidize. Even if you wash the pillowcase often, it gradually soaks through to the pillow and turns it yellow. Whether you can wash it whole depends on the filling.

🔬 Why this order works

Sweat, drool and sebum are a mix of protein and oil, so rinse first in cold water, break down the oil with detergent, then remove the remaining yellow with oxygen bleach. The pillow is thick, so drying it completely matters as much as washing.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

🧰 By material

① Polyester fiberfill pillows

Most can be washed in water and stand up well to oxygen bleach. Break up clumped filling by hand as it dries.

② Feather & down pillows

Wash with mild detergent only if the label allows, and don't use bleach, as it can strip the natural oils from the feathers. It takes a long time to dry all the way through.

③ Memory foam & latex pillows

Don't soak the pillow itself. Wash only the cover, and for stains on the pillow, tap with a cloth dipped in mild detergent solution and wrung out, then dry in the shade.

🚫 Don't

  • Using chlorine bleach — it can make sweat stains even more yellow.
  • Putting the pillowcase on before it's fully dry — mold and smells develop inside.
  • Putting memory foam or latex in the washing machine or dryer — it crumbles or loses its shape.

⏳ If it has already dried

Yellowing that's years old fades if you repeat the oxygen bleach soak two or three times, but it may not go completely white. If it still smells after washing or the filling stays clumped, it's time to replace the pillow.

💡 Tip

Adding a zippered protector under the pillowcase reduces how much soaks through to the pillow. Not lying down with wet hair helps too.

❓ Common questions

Drool marks have turned yellow.

Drool contains protein too, so rinse first in cold water, apply liquid detergent, then wash. Treat any remaining yellow with oxygen bleach.

Can I dry it in the sun?

Drying a fiberfill pillow in the sun helps clear out moisture and smells. Memory foam and latex don't cope well with direct sunlight, so dry them in the shade.
